How to achieve a good work-life balance as an entrepreneur
Starting and building your own business is challenging enough. Add social responsibilities, family life, and a vibrant social circle, and it can seem like an impossible task…
But fortunately, this isn't true, and with the right strategy and a solid plan, you can achieve success both in and outside your business in no time.
1. Create your own set of personal rules and stick to them
By creating a clear picture of what's important to you in your personal and business life, you give yourself the opportunity to develop routines and habits that support your priorities. Create an overview and build a set of personal rules that perfectly align with your goals.
For example, you might set a fixed end time for work, no matter what, and then make time for friends and family. You'll find that this way, you can not only enjoy more quality time but also be forced to work more efficiently and focused, making you more productive in the end.
As a guideline, we recommend setting rules and routines in areas such as:
- Personal development - Create clear goals in areas like rest, sports, health, and planning, and try to achieve them by maintaining habits.
- Entrepreneurship & professional life - Set a certain number of hours for specific tasks and jobs, eliminate distractions, and discover how you can work most efficiently.
- Social contacts & family life - Keep a clear eye on where your priorities lie in this area and act accordingly.
2. Mindfulness and awareness
For some, it sounds like a lot of nonsense, for others, it's the holy grail. What's it all about? Be aware of your surroundings and separate work and rest into two distinct categories.
The stress and unrest you can feel during your workday isn't easy to shake off and can strongly influence your free time. This is where awareness and calmness play a big role. Be aware that work time is over when your workday ends, and you need to make space in your head for relaxation.
How you achieve this is different for everyone, but small steps can take you a long way. For example, distance yourself from business calls and emails after 7:00 PM, take 10 minutes to unwind after your workday, or go for a run.
3. Work with fixed times
It might be less spontaneous, but making fixed appointments and habits with your partner, kids, or friends can be a huge positive addition when you're striving for balance in your life. By spending time creating social 'rituals,' you ensure that your loved ones get the attention they deserve, and you keep your social relationships strong.
Try to plan fixed evenings with your best friend or spend every Saturday afternoon having fun with your partner or child, and make sure the most important people in your life know they can count on you.
4. 'No is no.'
To get the most out of your time as an entrepreneur and family member, clear limits are necessary. So set rules, determine where your boundaries are, and don't move them for anyone. By being open and honest with yourself and others, you keep control over your schedule in your own hands and focus your attention only on what's important to you.
This means you sometimes have to say no, even when it's tough, and stick to the decisions you make. This way, you avoid making false promises and unkeepable agreements, and you also spare yourself a lot of unnecessary stress.
5. Plan, plan, plan…
It's time to put those personal rules we've been talking about into practice! By planning out each week according to your own rules and routines, you ensure that your attention is evenly distributed across all your priorities, and you give yourself the best chance to succeed in balance.
After processing all those appointments in your upcoming schedule, you'll determine what time you'll go to bed and what time you'll get up each morning. It may sound childish, we know, but it works! By planning rest and sleep properly, you get a complete picture of the number of hours you have available each day, and you can distribute your attention optimally.
Also, choose a moment for 'deep work'. In other words, make use of the hours when you know your concentration peaks, and schedule challenging tasks that require your full attention during that time.
6. Communication is key
Every person is unique, and communicating with others can be tougher than you'd like. As an entrepreneur, you often deal with situations and concerns that others aren't familiar with, making it even harder to convey what's on your mind.
Still, strong communication is the key to success in both business and personal collaborations, and it's the only way to achieve mutual understanding. By thinking critically about your own thought process and how you act on it, you navigate through unnecessary misunderstandings and disagreements, and you create a mindset that will help you find the ideal balance.
Let your loved ones or business partner know what you're going through, what's on your mind, and what you're struggling with, and work together to improve your communication skills. You'll soon find that others can understand you better than you think.
7. Take care of yourself
When you're not in balance, your personal and professional life won't be either. Especially when you have to divide your attention across many different areas and deal with high levels of pressure and stress, it's essential to prioritize yourself sometimes. By making time for yourself, you keep your body and mind in top condition, and you give yourself the energy to invest in the people you care about. Find balance within yourself, and the rest will follow naturally!
